4 Tips To Help You Save Money On Summer Cooling Bills

Posted on: 17 July 2016

If you live in a hot climate, you may dread paying your electric bill during the summer months. Running your air conditioner around the clock can get very expensive, and cooling bills can be quite high. Luckily, there are several things you can do to cut costs while still keeping your home at a comfortable temperature. Use the following tips to help save money on the keeping your home cool:

Get a Programmable Thermostat

Most people don't want the air conditioner to run for no reason when the house is empty, but no one wants to walk in to an uncomfortably warm home at the end of the day either. An easy solution for this problem is installing a programmable thermostat. When you have a programmable thermostat, you can keep your home at a warmer temperature when no one is home, and set your air conditioner to start running shortly before you get home so the house cools down.

Upgrade Your Insulation

Poor insulation is a common cause of high cooling costs during the summer. If your home is not well insulated, your air conditioner will have to run longer and more often to maintain a cool air temperature. It is well worth the investment to upgrade the insulation in your home. You may want to consider adding extra insulation to your attic, and also have spray foam insulation forced into your exterior walls. In addition to helping lower summer cooling costs, your new insulation can also save money on heating costs during the winter.

Create Shade Around Your Home

Planting large shade trees along the east and west side of your home can go a long way in blocking the hot rays from the sun and keeping your home cooler so your air conditioner does not have to run as much. It is also a good idea to create shade around your outdoor air conditioning unit; the cooler the unit stays, the less energy it will use to cool the air that is blown into your house.

Pay Attention to Windows

Take a look at the windows around your house-- if there are any cracks between the wall and the window casing hot is is probably seeping into your home and raising your cooling costs. Promptly repair any damage around the windows to prevent air seepage. Also make sure that all of your windows have blinds and/or thick curtains that you can close to help insulate the window and keep the heat from the sun out of your home.

Everyone Deserves a Little Luxury in Their Home

When I was growing up, my parents worked very hard to make ends meet for my family and we lived in a small, basic home. After I landed my first job as an adult, I purchased my first home. When I got a promotion at work, my salary increased dramatically and I started dreaming of having my bathroom remodeled to give it a "luxury spa" feeling. I felt guilty having a luxury spa in my home when my parents still lived in the same small home they raised us in, so I had their bathroom turned into a "luxury spa" as well! It felt great being able to "pay it back" to them for all the hard work they did in raising our family. I am looking into other home remodeling projects now, and I want to share what I am learning with others who would need the information!
