Ready for New Cabinets but Concerned about Costs? What to Know

Posted on: 1 December 2016

If you need to redo the cabinets in your kitchen, but you don't have the money for a high end, designer kitchen, you can get new cabinets without going over the top. When you choose stock cabinets at the cabinet store, you can create any type of look that you want while staying within your budget. Here are a few things to consider when you're looking at the color and design for the cabinets you're considering and options to look into when you're getting pricing and estimates.

Paint or Stain

The unfinished stock cabinets are far cheaper than the stained options that have custom designs. You can use any type of paint or stain to give the stock cabinets a high end look. Different stains can make the cabinetry throughout the property look rich, warm, contemporary, or whatever look you want to achieve. You can use any stain or color you see at the cabinet store on an unfinished wood cabinet, or you could leave the wood unfinished for a natural look.

Add Modern Hardware

Adding hardware to the stock cabinets is something that's easy to do, and you can get the pieces at an affordable price. Instead of purchasing cabinets that already have the components on, or special ordering the components to be placed on, you can get a builder grade pack of the hardware and do the work yourself for a big impact. You can also mix and match different types of hardware if you want.

Use Trim

Trim can be purchased and stained just like the cabinets to add some height and appeal to the stock cabinets that your purchase. Adding trim around the top of the cabinetry will give it a finished look, and it's affordable to do. You can also add it at a later date, after the cabinets are installed.

The experts can come to your house to measure the space and produce layouts for you to use, even if you're just installing stock cabinets around the home. There are a lot of different things that you'll want to take into consideration if you want to add a pantry or island or if you're looking for cabinets outside what the stock options offer you. The cabinet company may be able to add a few specialized features to give you what you want and to give the kitchen a high end feel when you upgrade.

Everyone Deserves a Little Luxury in Their Home

When I was growing up, my parents worked very hard to make ends meet for my family and we lived in a small, basic home. After I landed my first job as an adult, I purchased my first home. When I got a promotion at work, my salary increased dramatically and I started dreaming of having my bathroom remodeled to give it a "luxury spa" feeling. I felt guilty having a luxury spa in my home when my parents still lived in the same small home they raised us in, so I had their bathroom turned into a "luxury spa" as well! It felt great being able to "pay it back" to them for all the hard work they did in raising our family. I am looking into other home remodeling projects now, and I want to share what I am learning with others who would need the information!
