Bathroom Remodeling Choices To Keep Costs Controlled

Posted on: 21 August 2018

If you have a bathroom that desperately needs an upgrade, then you may want to start thinking about a remodel. A new bathroom can be quite expensive, especially when you start looking at the fixtures, toilets, tubs, and showers that can be installed. thankfully, saving money on some of these things is fairly easy, so follow some of the tips below to keep your budget in check.

Opt For A Gravity Toilet

You may have noticed that toilets range in price substantially and some can even cost as much as $600 or more. As far as toilets go, they typically all look pretty similar, so what is the reason for the additional cost? Well, some toilets are labeled as pressure assist toilets. These toilets help to force waste down the drain with the assistance of water pressure. The pressure comes from the fluid held in the tank, and the pressurized water is forced into the bowl when you flush.

You probably do not need a pressure assisted toilet, especially since they cost so much more than regular gravity toilets. Gravity toilets, as the name suggests, use gravity to flush wastes. The toilets are usually made from porcelain and the vast majority are low-flow varieties that help you to conserve water. The most basic of these may only cost you a few hundred dollars. If you decide on a two-piece model, then you can save yourself some cash and find options for less than $200.

Make sure that your new toilet does come equipped with standard parts though. This will make it easier and cheaper to make repairs down the road.

Look For A Basic Alcove Bathtub

Bathtubs come in a variety of shapes and sizes, with the most basic varieties fitting into a three-sided alcove opening. The tub itself only needs to feature a single finished side and this helps to reduce costs substantially. If you already have the alcove set up, then keep it intact and have a new alcove bathtub secured into the area. Drop-in tubs that have one or more sides exposed are the next cheapest option.

When you pick out your alcove or drop-in bathtub, look closely at the material that makes up the tub. While most people think that the majority of bathtubs are porcelain varieties, this is not correct. Most are actually acrylic, and this material is both lighter and cheaper than porcelain. Fiberglass is the next cheapest option and is a bit more sturdy, so you can look at this as well if you are not convinced that acrylic is a good choice.

Everyone Deserves a Little Luxury in Their Home

When I was growing up, my parents worked very hard to make ends meet for my family and we lived in a small, basic home. After I landed my first job as an adult, I purchased my first home. When I got a promotion at work, my salary increased dramatically and I started dreaming of having my bathroom remodeled to give it a "luxury spa" feeling. I felt guilty having a luxury spa in my home when my parents still lived in the same small home they raised us in, so I had their bathroom turned into a "luxury spa" as well! It felt great being able to "pay it back" to them for all the hard work they did in raising our family. I am looking into other home remodeling projects now, and I want to share what I am learning with others who would need the information!
